Greg was a two time Brooklyn Borough Champ in the high jump in 1964 and ‘65. But it was in the Pole Vault where Greg stands apart. He was co-captain of the team during his senior year with George Wisniewski. In 1965 he won the Penn Relays pole with a vault of 13’-6”. In the Schenectady Relays he vaulted to a NY State record of 14’-1/4”. Though that State record was soon eclipsed, Greg still holds the Tech school record with that vault in 1965.
One of his workout partners would be stationed by the make-shift pit holding a coffee-bean sack stuffed with torn pieces of foam rubber. If Greg was going to miss the pit he was supposed to throw the bag of foam under him before he hit the gym floor. The bag hit Greg in the head more often than it landed under him.
On the train to Tech from his Staten Island home he would often have a Coke and a Ring Ding to fuel up for his morning workouts.
After Tech: Greg went on to NYU where he vaulted 15'-0" indoors in 1967, a record that still stands.
